On February 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck just after 4 am local time, 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi in Turkey's Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers.

Nurdagi is along the Turkey-Syria border, and the quake was felt across the region, including in Syria and Lebanon. It hit before daybreak, when residents were likely asleep, knocking down buildings and sending residents into the streets.

Video from Turkey shared on social media showed dozens of collapsed buildings and residents huddled on darkened streets.

About 11 minutes after the main quake, a 6.7-magnitude aftershock hit about 32 kilometers northwest of the epicenter. Another aftershock, magnitude 5.6, followed 19 minutes after the main quake.

Nearly 1,000 search and rescue volunteers were deployed from Istanbul. Authorities said 16 structures collapsed in Sanliurfa and 34 in Osmaniye.

Mosques around the region were being opened as shelters for people unable to return to damaged homes, with temperatures around freezing.
