Ukrainian AN-26 Reconnaissance Plane Shot Down by MANPADS
Tensions escalated in eastern Ukraine as pro-Russian separatists claimed to have shot down a Ukrainian Air Force plane on Friday during a ground firefight in the town of Slaviansk. A photographer on the scene witnessed the aircraft spiraling to the ground with its starboard engine ablaze, while two pilots safely ejected via parachutes. However, the actual crash was not observed, according to Reuters. The separatists assert that the plane, an AN-30, was conducting aerial surveillance when it was targeted and hit by MANPADS (Man-portable air-defense systems). Vyacheslav Ponomaryov, the self-declared mayor of Slaviansk in the breakaway Donetsk region, characterized the downed aircraft as a spy plane. "The airplane was struck in the city center. I witnessed it myself. It was a remarkable sight. The residents who saw it applauded," stated Mr. Ponomaryov. A spokesperson for Ukraine's anti-terrorist operation acknowledged that a plane had been shot down but contended that it was an AN-26 transport aircraft engaged in humanitarian assistance efforts.  |

Still a very questionable acronym, though. I figured they were talking about those shoulder pads that used to be sewn into women's business jackets back in the '80s (like the ones Heart used to wear). |

You would think that a new acronym could be used wouldnt you? doesnt sound very macho does it? you know, for all that macho posturing? Even PADS sounds better than MANPADS lol
