The Iranian's came out and admitted they shot it down. They claimed they were on high alert after the air strike on Soleimani or whatever that guy's name was. They said the plane was flying in an "aggressive" manner. 737s do have the tendency to look aggressive on initial climb out, they are a smaller narrow body jet with surprisingly good performance. At first Iran did not apologize. Then they did but defended their position. Then they said whoever was personally responsible for shooting it down would be in trouble. And this was not a short nightmare for the passengers. When the plane was first shot it lost a lot of its electronics, meaning the avionics were no longer functioning. It still managed to fly around for a full 3 minutes before going down. I can't remember if the plane succumbed to the initial injuries done to its fragile little fuselage, or if they shot it a second time. Anyways, this was a palpable 3 long minutes of paralyzing fear. All the passengers would have been awake and very aware that something was horribly wrong. The inital rocket strike would have jolted the plane harshly, then it would've been apparent the vessel they were strapped into was in a critical condition. 3 very long minutes. |

It doesn’t necessarily have to be about the presence of US citizens. After all it’s an authoritarian state. It could well be anyone onboard who’s politics or ideology don’t tally with the state. A journalist, human rights watch for example.
