Ugandan Air Force Helicopter Crashes During Takeoff
A Ugandan Air Force Mi-17 helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a joint anti-terrorist operation, leading to significant casualties. The operation, named "Shujaa," was a combined effort of the armed forces of the DRC and Uganda against the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels. The incident occurred on September 26, 2022, when the Mi-17 helicopter, mainly used for transportation, medical evacuation, and VIP travel, crashed during takeoff after delivering a food consignment to Uganda People’s Defence Forces troops. Reports indicate that more than a dozen Ugandan soldiers died in the crash. The instructor-cum-pilot, identified as Ukrainian national Yury Vyshykvy, died on the spot, while the Ugandan pilot, Capt. Patrick Arinaitwe, and five other crew members sustained various injuries and are receiving treatment at Bombo Military Hospital outside Kampala. Preliminary findings suggest that the crash was caused by the helicopter's tail rotor striking a tree during takeoff, leading to the aircraft spinning uncontrollably before crashing. |

I’m more of a fixed-wing guy, but I can appreciate the utility of a helo - just not in those conditions. The LZ looks to be the size of a postage stamp, and leaves zero room for error. The tail rotor turned into a weed-whacker and the main rotor followed by imitating a yard edger. Those who wisely ran at the first sign of trouble will hopefully have an uneventful walk out of the jungle.
