Two Pasadena Police Helicopters Collide, Five Officers Injured
On November 18, 2012, federal transportation safety investigators launched an inquiry into a collision involving two Pasadena police helicopters, resulting in injuries to five officers and one civilian. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) initiated its investigation at the Pasadena Police Department's Benedict Heliport in Altadena, where the damaged police helicopters were located. Pasadena Police Chief Philip Sanchez cooperated fully, providing all relevant records, surveillance footage, and the police department's own investigation findings to the NTSB. The NTSB's primary objective was to determine the causes and circumstances leading to the helicopter collision. The incident occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on a Saturday at the heliport situated at 2175 Yucca Lane. One of the helicopters was in the process of taking off, while the other was preparing to land. Tragically, the main rotor of one helicopter struck the other, resulting in the collision. The Bell OH-58 helicopters were operated by skilled pilots, and their passengers, along with two individuals on the ground, sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. Fortunately, all those involved in the incident were discharged from the hospital the following Sunday. Pasadena Police Chief Philip Sanchez revealed that the collision took place while one officer was positioned on the port side of a helicopter, engaged in conversation with the pilot, although he did not provide further details. NTSB investigators planned to conduct interviews with the pilots involved in the collision in the subsequent days. At the time of the incident, one of the helicopters was patrolling above the Rose Bowl during the USC-UCLA game, while the other was conducting patrols over Pasadena neighborhoods. The Pasadena Police Department operates a fleet comprising four helicopters to carry out various law enforcement and surveillance duties. |
