Two Dead When Philippine Air Force Plane Crashes Near Batangas
An accident occurred on January 31, 2015, when a Philippine Air Force (PAF) light aircraft crashed at sea near Nasugbu, Batangas, during a training mission. The crash claimed the lives of two pilots, a pilot instructor, and a cadet pilot. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed by the PAF. The aircraft, an Italian-made SIAI-Marchetti SF.260 training plane, was operating out of Fernando Air Base in Lipa City. Batangas Vice Governor Mark Leviste reported that the crash occurred approximately 150 meters off the coast of Barangay Wawa in Nasugbu town. At the time of the incident, the PAF was conducting aerobatic maneuvers in preparation for a performance commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Nasugbu's liberation from Japanese Imperial Forces during World War II. The crash occurred amidst a practice session involving two other training planes. Lieutenant Colonel Enrico Canaya, an air force spokesman, stated that rescuers found the bodies of the pilot and co-pilot about 300 meters from the shore. Following the crash, Lieutenant General Jeffrey Delgado, the air force commander, ordered the grounding of approximately 16 remaining SF-260FH planes pending an investigation into the cause of the accident. Notably, some of these training planes have been modified for combat missions against insurgent groups. The Philippines military, facing challenges as one of Asia's most poorly-equipped armed forces, is concurrently dealing with Moro extremist and communist insurgents, along with territorial disputes in the South China Sea. In response to these security concerns, the Philippines plans to enhance its air capabilities by acquiring a dozen FA-50 fighter jets from South Korea by 2017. |

The crowd's reaction was eerie. They were screaming in mock terror during the stunts, but went stone silent when it actually hit the water. No screaming.
