Transair Flight T4-810 Ditched At Sea Off Honolulu, Hawaii
A Boeing 737-200 operated by Transair/Rhoades Aviation, registered under N810TA, encountered severe difficulties during flight T4-810 from Honolulu to Kahului, HI. The aircraft, carrying only two crew members, was in its initial climb from Honolulu's Runway 08R when it experienced a failure in its left engine, identified as a JT8D. At approximately 2,000 feet, the climb was aborted. Air traffic controllers at Honolulu immediately authorized a visual approach for the aircraft to Runway 04R. However, while maneuvering for the emergency return, the crew reported significant issues with their remaining engine, which was overheating. An urgent request was made for Coast Guard assistance. Despite efforts to safely redirect the aircraft, the crew lost visual contact with the airport. The control tower, noticing a low altitude alert, gave clearance for an emergency landing on any available runway and halted all other airport operations. Rescue services were promptly dispatched. In a critical turn of events, the aircraft was unable to reach the airport and was forced to make an emergency water landing approximately 2.7 nautical miles short of Kalaeloa Airport's Runway 29. The last known coordinates from the transponder were N21.275 W158.026, indicating the aircraft was at 50 feet above mean sea level and traveling at 113 knots. Remarkably, both crew members were rescued from the ocean. One pilot was airlifted to a hospital, while the other was transported by a rescue boat and then to a hospital.

I work for Transair on Maui and this plane N810TA was meant to land here on an ETA of 01:57a HST. I know both pilots very well and am wishing them a speedy recovery. I attached the weight and balance of the flight. I blocked out the pilots names for their privacy.

That was a VERY fast rescue. Those guys must be pretty sharp. Glad the crew got out. Wonder what the last work done to the engines was? Something on an overnight check, perhaps? |

What were they carrying? I worked for America West Airlines, and they had the sister aircraft to the one that lost it's top inflight off Hawaii years ago. It turned out the aircraft we had, and the one that lost it's top, had both been reinforced so they could carry pineapple. So that is why the one that lost it's top stayed together until landing. |

It was carrying 4 ULD containers of FedEx Ground freight, 1 ULD container of FedEx Air Express freight, 1 ULD container of loose cargo and 1 ULD pallet of loose cargo with some small boxes of FedEx hazmat.

It must have a completely different internal setup than the ones we had, which carried passengers. All the pineapple was loaded in the forward and aft cargo holds. There was no room for ULD containers at all. Did the airplane break up? Are they going to try and recover the aircraft or the cargo? How deep is the water it went into? I know it gets deep very quickly off the islands. |

Heard that C.B. Lansing (the flight attendant killed) may have been cut in half when she got sucked out of the plane. If you look at the picture here you will see a clear outline of what looks like the impact of her head right in front of the window as well as quite a bit of blood trail behind.  |

That aluminum is pretty sharp when it is torn. I have no doubt she was cut in two. The one we had from Hawaiian Airlines had corrosion all over it, and it spent 8 months in the hangar, while it was reskinned and new frames were made. Our structures guys were really good, and made all the frames from drawings. The skins came from Boeing. Our maintenance at AWA was always top-notch. It actually saved us when the airline went into bankruptcy later. If you go into bankruptcy, all the aircraft that are on leases can be reclaimed by their owners and taken away. But when they came and looked at how their leased aircraft were maintained, they were so impressed, I think we only lost 3 airplanes, out of a fleet of over 100 aircraft. The one we got from Hawaiian, that needed all the repairs, as also a 737-200, like the one that just crashed off Hawaii. |
