The Toughest Aircraft Ever Built

The B-17 Flying fortress , flown during world war 2, was an amazingly tough aircraft. The plane could sustain unimaginable damage from flak and cannon fire and still return her crews home.
Here are just a few examples.

Re: The Toughest Aircraft Ever Built

The top photo of the tinker toy, the ground crew is examining 20mm cannon fire that decapitated the pilot. The flight back had to be tough on the co-pilot.

Photos 3 and 4 are from an aircraft of the 91st bomb group where the tail gunner was trapped after a flak hit almost completely cut the tail off. The flooring connecting the tail gunner area to the rest of the plane was completely gone.

The bottom photo is from the "Belle Of Maryland" the damage was from 20mm cannon fire which started a fire and blew out the pilots control panel. The crew not only fought the nose fire but were dealing with an engine fire as well on the trip home.

The plane being shot down was the "Wee Willie" after it took a direct hit on the wing, blowing it off. It was the planes 128th mission.
