Three Die After A Cirrus SR-20 Hits a Piper Pawnee Towing A Glider

Survivors of a mid-air plane crash in Boulder, which tragically claimed the lives of three individuals over the past weekend, shared their harrowing experience on the Today Show.

During the interview conducted by Meredith Vieira, pilot Reuben Bakker and his two passengers, Brandi Hepburn and her 11-year-old son Javen McDonald, recounted the terrifying incident.

The crash unfolded when a Cirrus SR-20 aircraft collided with the Piper Pawnee that was towing Bakker's glider. In a matter of seconds, Bakker responded by swiftly disconnecting his glider from the tow rope and making a sharp right turn, maneuvering through the flames resulting from the collision.

Describing the moment, Bakker recalled, "It was instant. It was a huge fireball, and I wasn't sure if I was released yet [from the tow line]. I pitched back, banked to the right, and we just flew straight through a fireball. I didn't see the wreckage anymore because everything was red."

Hepburn also shared her feelings about the crash, saying, "I was horrified. I felt the heat on my forehead as we flew through the flames."

Tragically, the crash claimed the lives of 58-year-old pilot Bob Matthews of Boulder and 56-year-old passenger Mark Matthews of Englewood. The pilot of the tow plane, 25-year-old Alex Gilmer of Evergreen, also lost his life in the accident.

Well, even though they be dead, it shows the (otherwise) safe aspects of the Cirrus. That was a sweet landing, even if they were crispy.
