Thomsonfly 757 Bird Strike With ATC Audio, 2007

On April 29, 2007, Thomsonfly Flight 263H departed Manchester Airport for Arrecife on the Spanish island of Lanzarote. The aircraft was a Boeing 757-204, registration G-BYAW, carrying 221 passengers. Just moments after the aircraft lifted off from runway 06L, two large birds, reported at the time to be herons, struck the right-hand engine. Almost immediately, flames and bursts of black smoke could be seen coming from the back of the engine.

The pilots continued the climb and declared a Mayday after realizing the number two engine had been badly affected. The damaged engine was shut down, leaving the 757 flying on its remaining engine. Air traffic controllers made both Manchester and nearby Liverpool available for an emergency landing while the crew flew toward the Wallasey area and prepared to return to Manchester. Debris and remains from the bird strike were also discovered on the runway after the aircraft departed.

The crew eventually returned to Manchester and made a single-engine landing on runway 06R. Airport fire crews were waiting and followed the aircraft after it cleared the runway so they could inspect it before it taxied back toward the terminal. Despite the dramatic flames visible during the initial climb, Manchester Airport later explained that the engine itself had not caught fire; what witnesses saw was the result of the birds being ingested and the engine malfunctioning.

Everyone aboard escaped without injury. The incident became especially well known because aircraft spotters near Manchester captured the bird strike, flames, and emergency return on video, while radio recordings also preserved the Mayday calls between the pilots and air traffic control. The footage provides an unusually clear look at how quickly a serious engine problem can develop immediately after takeoff, and how a flight crew can safely bring a twin-engine airliner back using only one engine.

Re: Thomsonfly 757 Bird Strike With ATC Audio, 2007

I've only responded to one bird strike, an F-14... shows you how long ago it was above all else... but we didn't even get to deal with it because we couldn't get the runway lights up. It was when I was at Vandenberg AFB, they don't have an active flightline and at nights and weekends that place is a ghosttown unless there's a rocket coming in or there's fire.
