A beloved and longstanding anchor at a New Orleans television station met a tragic end in a small plane crash on Friday, along with the pilot who was flying the aircraft. Nancy Parker, who had been an integral part of the Fox 8 family for 23 years, was shooting a story in a stunt plane when the accident occurred near the New Orleans Lakefront Airport, shortly after 3 p.m. The pilot, identified as Franklin J.P. Augustus by Fox 8, also lost his life in the crash. Vice President and General Manager Tim Ingram expressed deep sorrow at the loss, highlighting Nancy's dedication to her work, where she covered numerous stories and impacted countless lives. He emphasized that her absence leaves an irreplaceable void. Nancy Parker, aged 53, is survived by her husband and three children. Both she and the pilot were pronounced deceased at the crash site, though authorities have not yet released the pilot's identity. Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, praised Parker as an exceptional anchor and a leader in local television. Benson noted Parker's ability to foster trust among those she covered and her viewers. The New Orleans Police Department acknowledged that Nancy Parker shared their mission to enhance the city's quality of life, making it a better place to live, work, and visit. They described her as a true lover of New Orleans, reciprocating the city's affection. According to the station, Parker hailed from Alabama and began her journey in news anchoring during her senior year in high school on the radio. Her career in television commenced in 1989 in Columbus, Georgia, following a brief stint in a US congressman's press office. She subsequently worked in Montgomery, Alabama, before joining Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1990. Her tenure at WVUE began in 1996 when she assumed the role of a weekend anchor. |
