Subhas Chandra Bose's Death in a Plane Crash in 1945
On August 18, 1945, the prominent Indian nationalist leader Subhas Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji, tragically died in a plane crash. The crash occurred in Taihoku, Japanese-occupied Formosa, which is now known as Taipei, Taiwan. This incident marked the end of a significant chapter in the Indian independence movement. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was being transported as a guest of Lieutenant General Tsunamasa Shidei of the Imperial Japanese Kwantung Army when the bomber they were in crashed upon takeoff from the airport in Taihoku. Bose sustained severe third-degree burns from the crash. Despite being rushed to the Nanmon Military Hospital in Taipei for treatment, his injuries proved fatal. In his final moments, as recounted by a witness, Bose expressed a sensation of blood rushing, indicating the severity of his injuries. The loss of this influential figure in the struggle for India's freedom from British rule was a significant blow to the movement and his followers. This account of Bose's death has been confirmed by multiple sources over the years, including a 60-year-old Japanese government document. Compiled in 1956 following a high-level probe ordered by the government of Japan, this report conclusively affirmed that Bose died in the plane crash on that fateful day in August 1945. |
