Somalian Plane Veers Off Runway and Crashes, Mogadishu International Airport
On July 11, 2023, a Halla Airlines Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia aircraft experienced a hard landing at Mogadishu International Airport (HCMM), Somalia. The flight was operating on a routine route from Garowe to Mogadishu. During the landing, the aircraft veered off the runway, collided with obstacles, and came to rest on uneven ground. This resulted in significant damage to the aircraft, including destruction to both propellers and a break in the fuselage behind the cockpit. Despite the severe damage to the aircraft, all 30 passengers and 4 crew members on board survived, with only minor injuries reported. Emergency services responded quickly to the accident, providing necessary medical attention and ensuring the safety of those on board. Investigations into the cause of the accident revealed that the aircraft encountered strong tailwinds and wind shear upon landing. This led to the left main landing gear breaking upon a hard touchdown, causing the aircraft to veer off the runway to the left and crash into the airport's perimeter concrete fence. The aircraft had undergone its last maintenance on May 5 and was certified as airworthy.
