Small Plane in Brazil Crashed into a Mortuary Chapel of a Cemetery
In Brazil, a tragic incident unfolded late Monday morning, with the clock nearing noon when a small aircraft crashed into a cemetery, igniting a fire. The flight was carrying two individuals. The pilot, Louis Fernando Chinkevicz, aged 34, tragically lost his life instantly in the accident. Alongside him was photographer Clodoaldo Marques Gomes, aged 46, who suffered minor injuries. Gomes was engaged in aerial photography at the time of the crash. Following the accident, Clodoaldo was promptly transported to Santa Terezinha Hospital in Cruz Machado. The hospital reported shortly thereafter that he was conscious and even assisted in the process of removing the pilot's body from the wreckage. Subsequently, the photographer was transferred to the Regional Hospital of União da Vitória, where he remains hospitalized for a series of medical examinations. Friends of Clodoaldo have shared that he is in stable condition but understandably deeply shaken by the traumatic experience. The ill-fated flight had originated from the União da Vitória airport, also located in the southern region of Brazil. Its purpose was to capture aerial images of Cruz Machado, a distance of 50 kilometers away. According to eyewitness accounts, the plane began flying at an unusually low altitude shortly before noon, ultimately crashing into the Mortuary Chapel within the cemetery, where it subsequently caught fire. A gardener who was present at the scene observed the entire sequence of events and noted that before the flames engulfed the wreckage, the photographer managed to extricate the pilot's body to prevent it from catching fire. Describing the photographer's actions, the gardener recalled, "He [the photographer] said, 'My God, my God, I dragged my companion so he would not catch fire.' Then he came to meet me, he was desperate." Louis had been an experienced pilot for five years and was well-known in his hometown of União da Vitória, which was also the residence of Clodoaldo. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, and an investigative team from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will be tasked with determining the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. |
