Sknyliv Airshow Disaster, Ukraine
On July 27, 2002, the Sknyliv Airshow disaster, one of the deadliest air show accidents in history, occurred at Sknyliv airfield near Lviv, Ukraine. The tragedy resulted in 77 fatalities, including 28 children, and injured over 543 people, some of whom suffered serious injuries. The disaster unfolded when a Ukrainian Air Force Su-27 jet, piloted by two experienced pilots, lost control during a maneuver and crashed into a crowd of spectators. The aircraft was performing at an air show attended by approximately 10,000 people, part of an event intended to boost local morale and showcase military prowess. Investigations into the crash revealed several contributing factors, including pilot error, inadequate supervision of the flight operations by military officials, and the unsafe organization of the event, which allowed spectators to gather too close to the show's active area. These findings led to widespread criticism of military procedures and air show safety protocols. Following the disaster, the pilots, Volodymyr Toponar and Yuriy Yegorov, were court-martialed and found guilty of failing to follow orders, causing the aircraft to crash. Toponar was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and Yegorov received eight years. Additionally, several high-ranking military officials were also charged and found guilty of negligence in organizing the air show. |

Re: Sknyliv Airshow Disaster, Ukraine
Thanks for the replies! I saw the video of this elsewhere on the site and I had to find photos. My favourite's the 2nd one. The pilot's being launched to safety the moment before everyone in that crowd is killed. Perhaps the people running on the left made it. |
