Six People Injured in Mi-26 Helicopter Crash Landing in Siberia
On May 4, 2020, a Mi-26 helicopter operated by UTair in the Yamal Peninsula, Siberia, experienced a crash landing. The heavy machine, weighing approximately fifty tons, encountered stormy wind conditions during its landing attempt. The incident occurred at a helipad near the Kharyaga oil mine, about 12 kilometers away from the base. The helicopter, which was en route back to its base after delivering cargo for an oil company, attempted to land in squally wind and rapidly deteriorating visibility conditions. During the landing, the helicopter crash-landed on its left side, some 700 meters away from the helipad. The crash resulted in the death of one of the six crew members on board, while the others managed to exit the helicopter and were subsequently under medical observation. Five crew members were transported to the Kharyaga oil workers' village and then flown to the Nenetskaya regional hospital. Two of the crew members were reported to be in critical condition with head and spine injuries. The emergency landing was unplanned, and the cause of the accident was under further investigation. Experts suggested that the crew might have failed to ensure the safety of the landing, although there could have been serious problems with the helicopter itself that contributed to the crash. |

Weather looks OK. Wonder if he landed on a bunch of loose pipes under a layer of snow?
