Russian Mi-8 Helicopter Crashes
On Friday, May 23, 2025, a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter crashed in the Oryol region of Russia, approximately 368 kilometers (229 miles) southwest of Moscow. The crash occurred near the village of Naryshkino in the Uritsky district. All crew members on board were killed. Reports indicate two fatalities, likely the pilot and flight engineer. A technical malfunction is considered the preliminary cause of the crash, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. However, some reports suggest potential engine failure. The helicopter was reportedly on a training flight. It crashed in a deserted area, and there was no damage on the ground. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the helicopter sharply tilt before an uncontrollable descent and some indicated smoke during the fall and a series of explosions after the crash, suggesting possible ammunition on board. A commission from the Russian Aerospace Forces has been sent to the crash site to investigate the incident. Local authorities and emergency services are also conducting investigations. This is the fifth reported case of engine failure on a Russian Mi-8 helicopter in the first five months of 2025 and also a significant increase compared to such incidents typically seen in previous years. There are reports of a critical shortage of helicopter engines in Russia, partly due to reliance on Ukrainian-designed engines and challenges in establishing sufficient domestic production. |
