On January 29, 2018, a significant incident occurred over the Black Sea involving a U.S. Navy EP-3E Aries II surveillance aircraft and a Russian Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet. The U.S. 6th Fleet reported that the Russian fighter jet conducted an unsafe intercept of the U.S. aircraft, coming dangerously close at a distance of approximately five feet and crossing directly through the EP-3's flight path. This action forced the U.S. plane to fly through the jet wash of the Su-27.

The encounter, which lasted for about two hours and 40 minutes, was deemed unsafe due to the close proximity and aggressive maneuvering of the Russian jet. The U.S. Navy EP-3E had to curtail its mission and return to base following this incident. This event is part of a series of similar encounters in the region, reflecting heightened military tensions and activities, especially after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

These incidents have raised concerns about the safety and professionalism of military operations in international airspace. The U.S. military emphasizes that their aircraft was operating in accordance with international law and did not provoke the Russian activity. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to international standards to ensure safety and prevent dangerous incidents, including adherence to the 1972 Agreement for the Prevention of Incidents on and Over the High Seas (INCSEA).
