On July 10, 2019, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter crashed into the Sea of Okhotsk near the coast of Siberia. The accident resulted in the deaths of all 18 people on board, including both crew members and passengers. The passengers were reportedly employees of a subsidiary of the state oil company Rosneft, traveling to work on an oil platform in the region. The Mi-8 helicopter, operated by Vityaz-Aero, a local airline, went down in bad weather conditions, with fog reported in the area at the time of the crash. The helicopter was en route from an airport in the town of Khabarovsk to the offshore drilling platform. Following the crash, search and rescue operations were launched, but challenging weather conditions and the remote location hampered the efforts. The wreckage of the helicopter was eventually located in the Sea of Okhotsk. Initial investigations suggested that poor visibility due to fog might have been a contributing factor to the accident. Further investigation was conducted to determine the exact cause of the crash, including examining the technical condition of the helicopter and the flight operations. |
