Russian Biplane Crashes at Airshow Near Balashikha, Russia

On September 2, 2017, a tragic accident occurred at an airshow near Moscow involving a Soviet-era biplane, the Antonov An-2. The incident took place at an airfield near Balashikha, a satellite town on the edge of Moscow. During the airshow, the vintage An-2 aircraft was performing an aerial acrobatics routine when it crashed, leading to the death of both crew members on board.

According to a spokesman for the Moscow region police, the plane came down in a field, and fortunately, no spectators were injured. The police were present at the scene to establish the causes of the crash. A source in the emergency services suggested to the TASS news agency that pilot error was viewed as the most likely cause of the crash.

Eyewitnesses captured video footage showing the Antonov propeller plane bursting into flames upon impact with the ground, followed by thick black smoke rising into the air. The An-2, a single-engine plane, was initially put into production shortly after World War II and was commonly used for transport or crop dusting.

Didn't look like a loss of control, maybe disoriented, descended too low? Possible mechanical failure?

The aircraft was coming out of a barrel roll and was turning onto runway heading. Altitude was lost during a sharp left hand turn.

Classification: loss of control.

Re: Russian Biplane Crashes at Airshow Near Balashikha, Russia

Looks like they spent too long in the turn and lost lift, if they'd levelled out sooner they would at least have only hit on the wheels not the wing. Then again maybe the pilot had a stroke or something, high blood pressure from the excitement popped his noggin
