Piper PA-46-350P Malibu Crashes into Restaurant

Yesterday a small private plane, a Piper PA-46-350P Malibu, crashed into a restaurant in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. local time, shortly after the aircraft took off from the local airport.

The crash resulted in four fatalities, all of whom were on board the aircraft. There were no reported casualties on the ground as the restaurant was closed at the time.

The victims were identified as Débora Belanda Ortolani, a businesswoman. Her husband Luiz Ortolani being a businessman. Pilot Nélio Maria Batista Pessanha and co-pilot Renan Saes.

The flight departed from Capão da Canoa Airport and was bound for Ibitinga, São Paulo.

Security footage and local reports show the plane flying at a very low altitude shortly after takeoff.

The aircraft began losing height suddenly before striking a pole near the airfield and crashing into the building.

The impact triggered a massive fireball and explosion that also damaged several nearby homes.

The Piper was owned by Jetspeed Holding Limitada. One of the victims, Renan Saes, was a partner in the aviation company to which the aircraft belonged.

Video from near the Capão da Canoa Air Club shows the pilot taxiing and immediately accelerating for takeoff without performing a backtrack to use the full length of the runway. This suggests the aircraft may not have gained sufficient speed or altitude before hitting a pole.

This specific model is a pressurized, six-seat light aircraft known for high-altitude business travel. The flight was a private operation.

My first plane was a Piper PA-28. That thing was so much fun. Shame to see a Piper go bad like that.

It’s going to be hell trying to fix all those wires hanging from the electrical pole.
