Piper PA-28 Crashes at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Georgia

In an incident on February 16th, 2023, a single-engine plane departing from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport was involved in a crash, resulting in injuries to a child and an adult, as reported by the fire department.

Fortunately, both passengers aboard the single-engine Piper PA-28 were not severely injured in the crash, which did not result in a fire upon impact. The aircraft was engaged in a training exercise and had taken off from the airport at approximately 2:40 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, the second busiest in the Atlanta metro area, witnessed the incident. A witness, identified as R.S., who is also a pilot, noted that the plane lost power but managed a skillful emergency landing on the runway, ensuring the safety of the passengers.

A kinda possible impossible turn. Harder hit than I expected as the injuries were described as minor.

Not a lot of good options around there. Someone tried their luck on I85 a few years ago with a negative outcome. I believe the video is on here.

Normal climb out, positive rate, gear up, and then...

I don't know about anyone else, but I noticed a slight wing rock just before and after the line-of-sight to the tower. Coulda been just slight yoke control movements, but I'm guessing that's when the pilot did an "Oh, shit" and tried to figure out how he was gonna RTB with what little airframe energy he had left.

Re: Piper PA-28 Crashes at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Georgia

During a training session, a Piper PA-28-181 Archer II experienced a loss of engine power after takeoff from runway 21R at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK/KPDK), Atlanta, Georgia. When trying to return, the aircraft made a 180-degree turn and crashed off the right side of the approach end of 03R (21L). Hitting the embankment caused the aircraft to lose its left wing. The fuselage remained intact and the 2 crew were able to exit the aircraft by themselves. The aircraft did not catch fire.
The flight instructor and student pilot sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital nearby. The aircraft was written off and turned over to the FAA for investigation.
