Piper Cub Crashes into the Water at Huntington Beach, California
On Friday afternoon, a small aircraft experienced a crash landing into the ocean at Huntington Beach, startling onlookers. Captured in an online video, the plane, towing a banner, was seen rapidly descending around 1:30 p.m. before plunging into the water just short of the shoreline. This incident took place just south of Beach Boulevard. According to the California Surf Lifesaving Association, the crash occurred near a junior lifeguard competition that was on a break at the time. Several junior lifeguard participants were involved in the rescue efforts of the pilot. The aircraft, identified as a single-engine Piper Cub, had only the pilot aboard when it went down, as confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration. While the pilot's condition was initially unclear, subsequent footage from the scene showed him in a neck brace, seated upright in the back of a lifeguard vehicle, receiving an evaluation. Thankfully, no severe injuries were reported. The crash investigation falls under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Huntington Beach police and fire departments responded to the incident, securing the area around the crash site. The rest of the beach, however, remained accessible to the public. |

Re: Piper Cub Crashes into the Water at Huntington Beach, California
There was plenty of handy help available when a banner-towing Cub ditched off Huntington Beach, California, on Friday. The J3C-65 registered to Seashore Advertising Corp. went in the drink about 100 feet offshore next to the California Surf Lifesaving Junior Guards Championship. The Cub reportedly lost power. It was between events so there were no competitors in the water but to their credit, they headed for the messed-up airplane and the pilot, who was sitting on top of the plane. The kids were called back but there was plenty of other fully qualified help around to perform a thorough rescue. The pilot had minor injuries and was sent to a local hospital as a precaution. The Cub is a write-off. |
