Pilot Killed when a Gripen Fighter Jet Crashes During an Airshow in Thailand
During a Children's Day airshow on Saturday morning, a Gripen fighter jet tragically crashed on a runway in Hat Yai, leading to the temporary closure of the local airport. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:27 a.m., sadly resulted in the death of the pilot, Sqn Ldr Dilokrit Pattavee, as reported by regional news sources. Eyewitness videos shared online captured the alarming moment during the airshow. Spectators watched as the jet, reportedly a Swedish-manufactured Gripen 39C, approached the runway for a stunt. Tragically, the aircraft went into a nosedive following a flip and crashed at a distance. In an unfortunate turn of events, a fire engine responding to the crash site also overturned on its way, further complicating the emergency response and prompting authorities to temporarily close the Hat Yai airport. As a result of the closure, incoming commercial flights were redirected to Krabi airport, while departures from Hat Yai were delayed. Officials anticipated reopening the airport by the afternoon. Air Force spokesman Pongsak Semachai announced that an investigative committee would be formed to examine the crash details. The Royal Thai Air Force has called for public respect towards the family of the deceased pilot and others impacted by the tragic event. In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha extended his deepest condolences to the family of Sqn Ldr Dilokrit Pattavee. |
