Pilot Dr. Joseph Michaels Killed in Crash During the Stuart Air Show
Dr. Joseph Michaels, an experienced pilot and regular performer at the Stuart Air Show, tragically lost his life in a fiery plane crash on Friday afternoon. The accident occurred during a practice routine, marking the first plane crash in the 30-year history of the Stuart Air Show. Michaels was the sole pilot scheduled to fly a Grumman Mohawk, a distinctive aircraft, during the show. According to Sheriff William Snyder of the Martin County Sheriff's Office, Michaels, a South Florida native, had been a familiar presence at the air show in previous years, known for his skill and experience as a pilot. The crash took place at the airport during Michaels' practice routine. "It was in its practice routine and it went nose down into the runway," said Chris Kammel, bureau chief of Martin County Fire Rescue EMS. Witnesses reported seeing black smoke rising from the site, and the plane was fully engulfed in flames upon impact. Despite the immediate response from Fire Rescue officials stationed at the airport, nothing could have been done to save Michaels. The Stuart Air Show, in a heartfelt post, remembered Dr. Michaels as a beloved performer. "He will always be remembered as we move forward in future endeavors," the post read. The air show described him as a member of their family, a sentiment echoed by the community that knew him. |
