A pilot died on Friday after the Fouga Magister CM-170 jet which he was flying during an airshow in Lavandou, southern France, crashed into the Mediterranean sea, said French authorities.

"The body of the pilot has been recovered," said the local authority responsible for the Var region in southern France.

French authorities added that an inquiry was underway to examine what caused the accident.

The airshow was part of a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Allied forces' D-Day landings in Provence.

The airshow had also involved the French Air Force's 'Patrouille de France' aerobatics team, which decided to cancel its demonstration at the event in light of the accident.

The crash comes just two days after two French military jets collided in eastern France, killing two military personnel and leaving a sole survivor.

The father of Didier Berger, the pilot who died in the crash at Le Lavandou, had already been killed in a plane accident.

His chrome-tinted Fouga Magister was making the rounds at air shows. A former fighter pilot in the Air Force, Didier Berger was the victim of the crash off the coast of Le Lavandou this Friday.

Aged 65, he had enlisted in the Air Force from 1980 to 1997. The man who spent part of his childhood in the Paris region learned his trade on this aircraft near Cognac, as was the custom at the time. As a student pilot, he also discovered another iconic aircraft, the AlphaJet.

Looks like he ventured into the grey zone in the too tight high G turn & splashed it.

It takes an incredible amount of skill to stay focused on the program that you want to fly in a display & even more stregth & skill to even move the stick in a high G turn like that.
I think that he was trying to fly above & beyond his skill set.
