Passenger Captures Moment Vintage Convair 340 Crashes, Killing 2
Investigations into the airplane crash north of Pretoria, S.A. are still continuing.

East of the Moloto Road, near Sakabuka Avenue in Kameeldrift, lies the wreckage of the historic aircraft that crashed into the field last Tuesday.

The Convair 340, manufactured by General Dynamics, was on a test flight to Pilanesberg.

Qantas pilots Douglas Haywood and Ross Kelly were among 19 people, including three Dutch and 14 South Africans, aboard the Convair which left Wonderboom Airport in Pretoria for a scenic flight.

Had it successfully completed the flight, it would have been sent to its new owners Aviodrome in the Netherlands.

Aviodrome general manager Serena van Kammen said the transfer of the plane from Rovos Rail to Aviodrome was already done.

“It would have been a nice addition to our collection.”

The aircraft had a certificate of airworthiness that would have expired on 15 August.

Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing out of the plane’s left engine as it took off from Wonderboom airport.

More than 20 people were injured when the plane crashed – two fatally.

The two highly-experienced Australian pilots of a crashed Convair CV-340 did not follow the prescribed checklist procedures when they discovered an engine had caught fire, a South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) preliminary accident investigation report says.
