Mooney M20M Loses Critical Parts; 3 Killed in Victoria, Minnesota

I have never posted, but the couple involved were friends of mine. They lived everyday like it was their last, and were wonderful people.

In Victoria, Minnesota, a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of three individuals, and a relative has identified the victims. The accident involved a small plane and occurred in southeastern Minnesota. The victims include a 42-year-old man identified as J.M. from Libby, Montana, his 37-year-old wife, S.M., also from Libby, and the pilot of the plane, 72-year-old Dr. J.E., who was the stepfather of J.M.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the plane was en route from Alexandria Municipal Airport to Eden Prairie's Flying Cloud Airport and crashed in Victoria, a city with a population of about 7,300, located approximately 25 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The crash resulted in a fiery scene, but there were no survivors.

Debris from the Mooney M20M aircraft scattered in nearby yards, and at least one house was struck, causing a fire that was swiftly extinguished. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the residents of the home or anyone on the ground.

A preliminary accident report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the pilot acknowledged a safety alert shortly before the crash. The report states that when the plane was approximately 9 1/2 miles from the runway at Flying Cloud Airport, it descended below 2,500 feet msl (mean sea level), triggering a low altitude alert to the Flying Cloud tower controller. The controller then transmitted a safety alert, which the pilot acknowledged.

Shortly after acknowledging the safety alert, the plane made an abrupt left turn and descended rapidly, leading to a loss of radar contact and communications. Notably, no distress call was transmitted during this time.

The preliminary report also mentioned that witnesses heard loud popping sounds before the crash and observed the plane descending with both wings "folded up," which was also captured on security video.

Authorities located the left horizontal stabilizer and left elevator between 700 and 800 feet southwest of the crash site, as stated in the preliminary report. Additionally, a 6-inch section of the main wing spar upper cap splice was found about 300 feet southwest of the crash site.

Mooneys are some of the fastest aircraft built in the U.S. I don't think there is any model they make that is slower than 200 mph top speed.

Re: Mooney M20M Loses Critical Parts; 3 Killed in Victoria, Minnesota

this flight log shows that at one point airspeed was as low as 70kts...followed by diving at 1500ft/minute, then done.

so, medical emergency or pilot disorientation in cloud, then (someone) stalled it, then pulled the wings off, etc, before it hit the ground.

either way i'd guess maybe the passengers couldn't fly it and couldn't operate the radio. would have been a wild ride.

It's important to remember that that is ads-b data is ground speed not airspeed but I agree with you they got slow and stalled it then spun and then the wings folded.
