Military Helicopter Crashes into the Sea During Landing
On December 9, 1999, a tragic incident unfolded during a training exercise involving a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter, carrying 18 individuals, attempting to land on the Navy tanker PECOS (T-AO 197). During the landing attempt, a harrowing mishap occurred as the helicopter's landing gear became entangled with a metal safety net. The ensuing chain of events led to the helicopter flipping over and plunging into the water, where it rapidly sank. Fortunately, 11 Marines were rescued from the water by specialized warfare crewmen aboard two nearby vessels. However, the incident claimed the lives of six Marines and one sailor who tragically drowned. Their bodies were subsequently recovered from the submerged wreckage through the use of an unmanned submersible vehicle. |
