MI-8 Helicopter Crashes During Gidroavisalon Airshow

On September 4th, during the "Gidroavisalon 2014" airshow in Gelendzhik, Russia, a Mi-8 helicopter crashed near the airport's runway.

The crash resulted in several injuries, with no casualties reported on the ground. The incident occurred around 15:30 Moscow time.

Tragically, two crew members lost their lives, and one sustained injuries. The helicopter's occupants included aircraft commander Valery Kramarov, second pilot Igor Khodak, and flight engineer Gennady Kosenko.

The Mi-8 was attempting to land but faced challenges during its approach. After a failed initial attempt, the helicopter touched down on its second try but was thrown off course by strong winds, leading to an explosion upon impact.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with engine thrust failure suspected as a contributing factor. Experts will analyze the flight data from the helicopter's black boxes to determine the exact cause.

While the incident occurred near the airport's runway, all waiting passengers were evacuated from the terminal. Subsequently, the airport was temporarily closed, and flights were rerouted to Krasnodar and Anapa.

That crash had nothing to do with wind...it was auto rotating and hit the ground too hard for the tail section. Something in the engine stopped during the high hover and it auto rotated too fast and turned in the opposite direction causing the torque in the tail section tearing it off. Looks like equipment/maintenance issues...not wind.

not autorotation- a helicopter needs forward motion through the rotor blades for autorotation to work, this was falling straight down- this was likely due to what is called a vortex ring state- the vortex ring state (VRS) is a dangerous aerodynamic condition that may arise in helicopter flight, when a vortex ring system engulfs the rotor, causing severe loss of lift. The vortex ring state is sometimes referred to as settling with power. its taught during flight training and this pilot seemed to forget this is possible- no matter how much power is added it will continue to fall- only way to get out of it is start forward movement but it was too late as altitude went away real fast. only reason I know this is I have flight training in rotorcraft...fyi

Good to have a knowledgeable person with possible/probable explanations on board at DR who knows these things!
