Medical Helicopter Crashes During Take Off in Albuquerque

A medical helicopter operated by PHI Air Medical crashed upon attempting to take off from the rooftop helipad of the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque. The incident occurred after the helicopter had delivered a patient to the hospital. The crash took place on April 9 at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The helicopter experienced an unforeseen issue during takeoff, leading to the aircraft coming off the helipad and resting on its side on the hospital rooftop. Witnesses reported a gust of wind around the time of the crash and observed the helicopter wobbling as it began to ascend from the helipad. The damaged tail section of the helicopter was seen hanging over the edge of the roof.

The pilot of the helicopter was reported to be in satisfactory condition following the crash, while the two other crew members, a man and a woman, were under observation. There were no serious injuries reported among the crew. It was also confirmed that no patients were on board the helicopter during the incident.

Had fingers crossed that it would stay of the roof and not fall over the edge of the building.
Mad ride, thank goodness no serious horrible injuries.

Pretty safe crash, and glad they got the patient off-board before it happened.

Motherfucker, it can't be that hard, it's just lift versus drag and rotation.

Tail rotor failure. It happened to me in the Army, lucky to survive.

Your are correct sir! The tail rotor is what keeps the heli from spinning around like that. Obviously it wasn't working here.
And that's what I call immediate safety measures. That shit got put out quick!

I guy I work with was a crew chief on a helicopter in the Army. They were coming in to land when the tail rotor drive failed (gearbox at the tail rotor seized).
He had just unsnapped his safety lanyard from the door frame, so he could jump out as soon as they touched down. When the tail rotor drive failed, he got pitched out of the aircraft and tossed about 50 feet away. The helicopter lifted, rotated, and then slammed down on the ground, pancaking, and blowing up from ruptured fuel tanks. Everyone else on the chopper was killed except him. He said it wasn't even a full second after he had detached the lanyard that he flew out the door. So his life depended on that very second. If he had been slower or lazier, he would have died too.
I was also impressed in this video by how fast the fire sprayers started up. I wonder how they are controlled. Nice to know they exist. Even if you were on fire, you could stop, drop, and roll and maybe survive.
