Re: McClellan-Palomar Airport Crash, Helicopter Spins Out of Control
That's one of the saddest, most helpless situations I've ever seen I know it's an odd thought, but the first clip annoyed me. I was thinking "stop filming immediately you dunce and dial 911!!!". But alas, nothing would arrive in time to save the poor souls. |

Re: McClellan-Palomar Airport Crash, Helicopter Spins Out of Control
They were obviously having difficulties landing from the start, probably why the person filming started filming in the first place. I'm gonna take a guess at some kind of mechanical misfunction.

Re: McClellan-Palomar Airport Crash, Helicopter Spins Out of Control
The problem with Helicoptors is the engine runs at 95-98% power all the time. Landing, taking off, cruising, it just doesn't matter. So when things start to go bad the motor has to spin down from damn near full revs before any real advantage comes from it. An airplane on the other hand, the engine during landing is almost completely stopped just prior to touching down. That why when you see (smaller) planes have issues at landing, it's generally not life threatening as the motor can be killed very quickly and then you are only at the hands of gravity and friction. In the little Cessna 170 I flew, roll-up speed is only 55 miles an hour and landing is generally even lower than that by the time you touch down. I'll stick with planes, thanks! |

Re: McClellan-Palomar Airport Crash, Helicopter Spins Out of Control
I have flown that type of ship. The moment the ship made its first tail strike it was basically over. There is a lot of room in the cockpit and based on the ground resonance that I could see, the second the ship flipped, both occupants were probably completely disoriented and perhaps forcibly thrown into the passenger area. As a fellow pilot I can only hope that both occupants felt little to nothing during this tragedy. And like Saber said above--airport crash units seemed to be quite slow to respond. Very sad.
