Korean Airlines Flight 801 (6 August 1997)

In a tragic incident that unfolded on August 6, 1997, Korean Air Flight 801, en route from Seoul, South Korea, to Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam, ended in disaster. The Boeing 747-300 aircraft, carrying 254 people, saw the loss of 228 lives in one of the deadliest aviation accidents to occur on U.S. territory.

Flight 801's journey commenced at Seoul's Kimpo International Airport, destined for Guam, a popular tourist destination in the Western Pacific.

A total of 254 individuals were on board the ill-fated flight, including 23 crew members comprising both cockpit personnel and flight attendants.

The crash of Flight 801 was attributed to a combination of factors. Investigations revealed that adverse weather conditions, crew fatigue, and pilot error played significant roles. As the aircraft attempted to land at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, it descended prematurely, striking a hillside approximately three miles short of the runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) led the investigation into the crash. Their findings indicated that the flight crew failed to adequately monitor the aircraft's altitude and descent rate. Crew fatigue and a lack of situational awareness were identified as contributing factors.
