Helicopter Enters into a Spin and Crashes onto the Runway
A potential catastrophe was narrowly averted on that Wednesday afternoon at the Gruyère aerodrome. At approximately 2 p.m., an elderly pilot, aged 65, and his 70-year-old passenger embarked on a leisurely helicopter flight courtesy of a private company located in Epagny. Shortly after takeoff, an alarming incident unfolded as the helicopter unexpectedly entered a spin mid-air, plummeting several meters before crash-landing on the Epagny aerodrome's runway. This dramatic turn of events was disclosed in an official statement by the Friborg cantonal police. In the wake of the crash, the pilot and passenger, both of whom were injured, were swiftly rescued by dedicated ground personnel and paramedics. Subsequently, the pilot was transported to a hospital via ambulance, while the passenger was airlifted by a REGA helicopter to the same medical facility. It is worth noting that both individuals hailed from the canton of Bern and were acquainted. While the police refrained from specifying the severity of their injuries, Bertrand Ruffieux, the spokesperson for the cantonal police, commented on the near-tragedy, saying, "What I can affirm is that we narrowly averted a disaster. It can truly be described as miraculous. Fortunately, the helicopter managed to touch down in the correct orientation, with its skids making contact with the ground. Had it struck the rotors, the outcome would have been markedly different." |

A lot of credit goes to that pilot - This is a classic case of loss of tail rotor authority. He managed to get some airspeed and almost fly the thing our of the spin, using the slipstream to keep it straight, but ran out of rotor and altitude in the end. Excellent. And yes, I know helicopters, LOL |
