Gyrocopter Hits Power Lines Before Crashing into a Water Reservoir
A tragic accident occurred at the Klyazma Reservoir in the urban district of Dolgoprudny, Moscow Region, when a gyrocopter collided with high-voltage power lines before crashing into the water. The incident, which took place above the reservoir, resulted in the deaths of both the 52-year-old pilot, who was also the owner of the aircraft, and his 31-year-old son. The gyrocopter, identified as a Tango-2 model with registration RA-0674A, was filmed by an eyewitness as it flew near the power lines during the early evening. The aircraft, reportedly flying at an altitude of around 50 meters (164 feet), got too close to the high-voltage cable, leading to a collision. Following the impact, the gyrocopter plummeted into the reservoir. The investigation into the accident revealed several contributing factors, including the pilot's performance under the influence of alcohol (1.7‰), lack of pilot training, insufficient preparation regarding the terrain and obstacles in the flight area, and the decision to fly at an extremely low altitude. The absence of overhead line markings also played a role in the accident. Prosecutors opened a criminal case to investigate the incident, focusing on the violation of air traffic safety regulations. |
