First Passenger Death in an Airplane Crash, 1908
On September 17, 1908, an Army lieutenant serving as an official observer was killed when a Wright Flyer crashed during a flight. A few minutes after takeoff, at about 100 feet, a propeller split and shattered, sending the aircraft out of control. The passenger suffered a fractured skull and died that evening at a nearby Army hospital. Pilot Orville Wright was seriously injured, including a broken left leg. The crash was the first fatality involving an airplane passenger.
