Fire Erupts As Two Planes Collide on Toronto Airport Tarmac

Passengers found themselves in a tense situation when they were compelled to evacuate in frigid conditions on a Friday night after two aircraft collided on the tarmac at Toronto's Pearson International Airport. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries in the incident.

The mishap occurred when a WestJet aircraft, inbound from Cancun, Mexico, carrying 168 passengers and a crew of six, had come to a standstill while waiting to proceed to a gate. In an unfortunate turn of events, it was struck by a Sunwing aircraft that was in the process of being moved away from a gate.

Video footage of the incident captured flames emanating from one of the planes, accompanied by the panicked screams of passengers. Jeremy Cohn, a news cameraman from Toronto, shared the audio recording of the WestJet flight's mayday call to the control tower. The pilot urgently conveyed the need for evacuation, prompting the swift response of fire crews.

Lauren Stewart, a spokesperson for WestJet, confirmed that the passengers on their flight were evacuated using emergency slides and were all safely inside the terminal, going through customs shortly after the collision.

Explaining the situation, WestJet released a statement, saying, "Due to the position of the aircraft on the laneway, WestJet guests required evacuation via emergency slide. Emergency crews were on hand and responded immediately."

On the other hand, Sunwing reported that none of its crew members or passengers were on board their aircraft at the time of the incident. It was in the process of being towed by the airline's ground handling service provider when the collision occurred.

Canada's Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding the collision.

Looks like Sunwing's ground handlers pushed the 737's tail into the Westjet 737, resulting in damaging the APU, and causing it to catch fire.

Great post, I'd step over people to get off,
I always fly first class right next to the front doors of the plane, not because I'm rich or posh, its because I'm scared and cowardly !!

next to the pilots, the first part to hit the ground.

if you want to survive a crash, sit over the wings, or at the back.

....or take the train
