The Farnborough Air Show Tragedy of 1952

On September 6th, 1952, a tragic incident unfolded at the Farnborough Airshow when a DH.110 prototype aircraft suffered a catastrophic mid-air breakup, resulting in the loss of 29 spectators, the pilot, John Derry, and the onboard flight test observer, Anthony Richards. The ill-fated DH.110 had been participating in a demonstration when, during a maneuver, the aircraft disintegrated. The root cause of this disaster was traced back to a flawed wing leading-edge design.

In the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, the DH.110 was immediately grounded, and stringent safety protocols were implemented. Remarkably, since that day, no member of the public has lost their life at a British airshow. Following crucial design modifications, the DH.110 would go on to serve in the Royal Navy as the de Havilland Sea Vixen.

The scheduled DH.110 demonstration on that fateful day was nearly canceled due to an unserviceable nightfighter prototype aircraft at Farnborough. However, John Derry and Anthony Richards, undeterred, hurriedly fetched the DH.110, aircraft registration WG 236, and flew it from Hatfield to Farnborough, just in time for their slot.

During their performance, after a low-level supersonic flyby and while executing a left bank maneuver at approximately 450 knots (830 km/h) toward the 120,000 spectators, disaster struck. The outer starboard wing failed, swiftly followed by the outer port wing, causing the aircraft to disintegrate further with both engines and the cockpit breaking away. Tragically, this incident resulted in injuries and casualties among the spectators.

The aftermath of the accident saw the air display program continue after the debris was cleared from the runway. Neville Duke, among others, showcased the prototype Hawker Hunter and even took it supersonic over the airshow later that day.

In response to this tragic event, both Queen Elizabeth II and Duncan Sandys, the Minister of Supply, expressed their condolences. New safety measures were implemented, mandating that jets at air shows maintain a minimum distance of at least 230 meters (750 feet) from crowds during straight flights and 450 meters (1,480 feet) during maneuvers. Additionally, they were required to maintain an altitude of at least 150 meters (490 feet).

The coroner's jury ruled the deaths of Derry and Richards as "died accidentally in the normal course of their duty." For the spectators who lost their lives, the jury similarly recorded that "the deaths were accidental" and added that "no blame is attached to Mr. John Derry."

An accident report dated April 8, 1953, identified the maneuvering as the cause of airframe instability, primarily due to a flawed D-nose leading-edge arrangement. Notably, this design had previously proven successful in the lighter subsonic de Havilland Vampire. Following necessary redesign and improvements, the DH.110 resumed its flight tests in June 1953 and ultimately evolved into the highly successful de Havilland Sea Vixen naval fighter.

Re: The Farnborough Air Show Tragedy of 1952

wheres the day people
What in gods name are you talking about?

Since your post makes no sense at all I will attempt to answer your question with what I think you might have meant

1. Do you mean "Wheres the date, people?"

Answer: 1952 is in the title and the complete date is in the backstory

2.Do you mean "Wheres the dead people?"

Answer: The 3 pictures show many dead people. You must have missed them. When you do find them make sure you click on them to open up the larger picture window so you wont miss the dead people again

3. Did you mean just what you typed? "Wheres the day people?"

Answer: That would mean that all of the spectators were night people, possibly vampires or hard core night owls. Because "day people" have no excuse to not go to an air show during the day. I cant spot any "day people" as well so we might have some crazy, kooky, dumb shit NWO conspiracy on our hands. This could be bigger then when Area 51 was found out to be just what it always was, a military flight testing base!

4. Did you mean "Where is my car dude"

Answer: You cant drive at age 13, so you can use that one in 3 more years when you turn 16

I hope one of these 4 answers helps you out chief

If they dont then ask mommy for some reading help

Allaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahu Akbar
At first I thought your comment was slightly out of line

Then I pictured the British Pilot with both wings ripped off going the speed of sound and instead of screaming oh shit and praying screaming Allaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahu Akbar! While aiming for the crowd

No both of our comments are slightly offensive

No disrespect to the people and families of people who lost their lives that day

RIP
