Diverted Wizz Air Flight due to Storm Ciara Crosswinds Makes Bumpy Landing
Passengers on a Wizz Air flight experienced harrowing moments during their landing at Birmingham Airport on Sunday, February 9th, amidst the powerful winds of Storm Ciara. I was just wondering. In cases of storm like that, is it possible that those wings be broken by the wind? Dont know much about aircraft building but are those wings flexible?

The wings are extremely flexible and are designed to take a great deal of punishment. There are videos of stress tests on airliner wings. The 777 stress test showed the wings tolerating 154% of the highest possible weather forces the plane could ever encounter, and was designed to tolerate a vertical displacement of 24 feet before failing. So yeah, this plane was fine in terms of physical strength. The bigger danger in situations like this is passengers being thrown around the cabin or struck by loose objects. That's why they tell you to keep your seatbelt fastened at all times. |

In the modern jet era, there is only one case of a catastrophe caused by "weather" aloft overstressing the structure, some crazy winds around Mt. Fuji in the 60's. And aircraft are much better since the 707 (if maintained correctly).

There are definitely plenty of circumstances where an airliner would be overstressed, but the pilots don't fly into conditions like those. However, my understanding is that most airliners would have the tail fail before the wing would.
