Delta Flight 191 (2 August 1985)

The aircraft crashed short of the runway while attempting to land on runway 17L at DFW.

Descending through 600 feet, the aircraft encountered severe microburst induced windshear and was pushed toward the ground. Despite the application of maximum power by the crew, the aircraft touched down in a field, careened across a busy highway snapping off light posts, and struck a car with its no.1 engine, killing the occupant.

The aircraft then entered the airport property with a ground speed of 212 knots and impacted two 4 million gallon water towers.

With a total 167 passengers, there were 136 deaths.

The NTSB cited known flight into severe weather conditions for causing the accident.

I love Lockheed, I love aviation in general. But, I do not like L-1011's or DC-10's. Maybe it's an irrational fear, but, those two planes are two big scary bitches.

Re: Delta Flight 191 (2 August 1985)

Remember watching the documentary to this when your in a microburst the plane will just get blown down wards by the thundercloud , full power and pointing the nose up should make the aircraft climb but it justs carries on going down.

No major US airlines still operate either plane for commercial purposes, and only 5 L1011s were even operational as of 2010, and the remaining DC-10s are cargo aircraft.

I've flown in L1011s before and they didn't seem any better/worse than any other comparable plane from that era.
