Crash of Katekavia Flight 9357 at Igarka Airport, Russia
Katekavia Flight 9357, an Antonov An-24 regional aircraft, crashed on its final approach to Igarka Airport in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, in the early hours of August 3, 2010. The crash resulted in the deaths of twelve of the fifteen people on board, including ten passengers and two crew members. The flight, operating on a domestic route from Krasnoyarsk to Igarka, encountered severe fog conditions during its approach, which significantly reduced visibility. The aircraft crashed approximately 700 meters west of the runway at Igarka Airport around 01:40 local time. At the time of the accident, the weather was reported as rainy, with light clouds and thunderstorms in the vicinity. The Federal Air Transport Agency noted that the aircraft veered off its landing course and collided with the ground in front of the runway. An investigation into the accident revealed that the crew attempted to land the plane in visibility conditions that were worse than the approved minimums for both the airfield and the aircraft. Crucially, the crew failed to execute a missed approach procedure in time, leading to the aircraft striking trees and terrain. The final report by Moscow's Interstate Aviation Committee, released in October 2010, concluded that the primary cause of the crash was the crew's decision to attempt the landing approach in conditions below the meteorological minima. Additionally, the crew's failure to make a timely decision to go around and their descent below the established minimum safe altitude without reliable visual contact with the runway or approach lights were critical factors in the crash.
