The Crash of Comair Flight 5191 in Kentucky
Comair Flight 5191, operating as a Delta Connection flight, met with a tragic accident in Lexington, Kentucky. The Bombardier CRJ-100ER aircraft, bound for Atlanta, crashed shortly after takeoff from Blue Grass Airport on August 27, 2006. The crash resulted in the loss of 49 lives, with only the first officer surviving. The flight took off from the wrong runway, a crucial factor that led to the accident. Runway 26, the one used, was unlit and too short for the aircraft, compared to the intended Runway 22. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that this mistake was primarily due to pilot error. Contributing factors included insufficient air traffic control procedures and a lack of visual cues to alert the crew to the incorrect runway. |
