Cockpit Recordings From Delta Air Lines Flight 1141

Here is audio from the cockpit recordings during the crash of Delta Airlines Flight 1141.

At 8:30 am CDT, Flight 1141 embarked on its journey, departing from the gate and receiving clearance to taxi towards runway 18L. However, the routine taxi was momentarily interrupted as air traffic control directed the aircraft to line up on the runway and await takeoff for one minute. The reason for this brief delay was the potential presence of wake turbulence generated by a departing American DC-10.

During this pause on the runway, the flight crew made a poignant request to extend their hold to two minutes, which was granted. In a somber twist of fate, the crew engaged in a conversation with the flight attendants, discussing the crash of Continental Airlines Flight 1713 and contemplating what they would say on the cockpit recorder in the event of an unfortunate incident.

As the minutes passed, the crew's conversation ceased, and they received clearance for takeoff. The initial stages of the takeoff proceeded without incident, but as the aircraft's main wheels left the ground, a sudden and violent rolling motion ensued, leading to the right wingtip making contact with the runway.

Subsequently, the aircraft experienced compressor surges, attributed to the disruption of airflow through the engine, rendering it unable to achieve the required altitude or maintain stable flight. The aircraft's path led it to collide with the ILS localizer antenna merely 1000 feet from the end of runway 18L. It remained airborne for an additional 400 feet before impacting the ground, ultimately coming to a rest 3200 feet from the runway's end.

A fire quickly erupted in the vicinity of the right wing, rapidly spreading and engulfing the rear of the aircraft. Remarkably, the entire sequence, from liftoff to the initial ground impact, transpired in a mere 22 seconds. This brief but tragic event left an indelible mark on aviation history, reminding all of the critical importance of safety and precision in every flight.

Only 14 dead. That's not bad at all. The scream from the Captain at the end is terrifying though.

"The National Transportation Safety Board, in its official report, adopted this scenario as the official cause of the accident. Cited for blame in the report was "the Captain and First Officer's inadequate cockpit discipline which resulted in the flightcrew's attempting to takeoff without the wing flaps and slats properly configured," and listed as a contributing factor was the failure of the takeoff warning horn system."

In essence, had the pilots focused on their jobs instead of shooting the shit, perhaps no one would have died...

Cockpit recorder only records audio.

Just like Colgan 3407, this is why pilots are REQUIRED to obey "Sterile Cockpit Rules" (FAR 121.542):

As identified in the FAR, they include: all ground operations involving taxi, takeoff, and landing, and all other flight operations below 10,000 feet except cruise flight. Activities such as eating, nonessential conversation between crewmembers or other personnel, and reading the newspaper are forbidden.

Bad for me. My father was one of the casualties. Millar H. Browne.
