One of the most horrifying crashes IMO, go to YouTube and check out the channel "theflightchannel" they did an amazing video on this with a simulator recreation as well as this audio. They were doomed as soon as they took off probably, definitely screwed once they popped the jackscrew. I can't get over the nearby pilots who had eyes on him as he went down. "The planes inverted." Crashed like 25 sec later maybe. After plummeting from 29k or whatever feet. This must have been unbelievably horrifying for passengers if they were able. to remain conscious. The transcript is out there, those pilots basically knew they wouldn't be able to land and asked to have a block over the water in case they were forced to ditch. Once I found an old article where they interviewed eyewitnesses on the islands near where it happened, apparently many people on the ground were traumatized from watching the plane go inverted before smashing into the water. |

Aside from the lack of maintenance issue, from a design perspective, this screw gauge and depth look too skimpy for such an important flight control function. If you consider the operating screws for large diameter water valves and gates, they are much much beefier than this aircraft stabilizer control. ![]() Beefier: See how thicker and deeper the screw threads are in the below sluice gate lifter compared to the relative screw diameter. Also see how screw runs through a lubricated transmission box with much more contact area for the screw. That aircraft stabilizer screw contact point shown on Page 1 is a joke compared to this. |

I think they could borrow some ideas from the auto industry and incorporate a Rack & Pinion style mechanism to actuate the movement. It would be an enclosed hydraulic unit with the threads immersed in a bath of lubricant at all times.... just check the fluid level, that could be easily equipped |
