Cargo Container Sucked into Airbus A350-900 Right-side Engine
On January 15, 2026, an Air India Airbus A350-900 (registration VT-JRB) suffered significant damage when a cargo container was ingested into its right-side engine (No. 2 engine) at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Flight AI101 was originally bound for New York (JFK) but performed an "air turnback" to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to the sudden closure of Iranian airspace. While the aircraft was taxiing back to the apron in dense fog (around 05:25 IST), it encountered a baggage container at the intersection of taxiways N and N4. A ground vehicle from Bird Worldwide Flight Services (BWFS) was transporting containers when a wheel on a container dolly failed, causing the container to topple onto the taxiway. The vehicle operator reportedly vacated the area to avoid the oncoming aircraft but left the fallen container behind. The container was sucked into the powerful engine, causing substantial damage to the fan blades and engine casing. There were no injuries to the approximately 240 passengers or crew on board. |
