British Airways Flight BA762 Makes Emergency Landing
A British Airways flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Heathrow with one engine damaged and the other on fire after tired engineers worked on the wrong aircraft. Passengers were left terrified when the covers of both engines blew off and one of them burst into flames and the pilot was forced to return to the airport on one damaged engine. |

Re: British Airways Flight BA762 Makes Emergency Landing
There are but only for the pilots. It used to be 8 hrs mandatory sleep but I think it got changed to 10 hrs. Nevertheless, during my classes, fatigue has been brought up many times and examples of what would happen. It seems like one of those scenarios that "I'd never do anything so stupid as fix the wrong aircraft!" until they've actually done it. It's a slippery slope in the aviation industry because it is so heavily regulated but then again, the regulations are published not to protect the pilots or mechanics but to protect the government from getting sued. |

There should be a framework of agreement in all critical safety occupations...Fatigued engineers will inevitably make mistakes and although this example is extreme it proves it can and does happen...I hope the Captain was disciplined for his neglect on preflight external checks.
