Belgian Pilot Makes Releases Emergency Parachute, BRS System
On July 15, 2022, a Belgian pilot had a miraculous escape after a mid-flight emergency near Bruges, Belgium. The pilot was flying a Dyn’Aéro MCR-01 Club light aircraft, registered OO-E64, when for unknown reasons, he was forced to deploy the aircraft's Ballistic Recovery System (BRS), an emergency parachute system designed for such situations. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and then saw the aircraft descending slowly to the ground. The plane eventually made a nose-first landing on a road in Sint-Andries. Fortunately, the pilot managed to walk away from the crash and only sustained minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The BRS system allowed for a more gentle descent and landing of the aircraft. Upon arrival, police and firefighters found the crashed aircraft and promptly sprayed foam over it as a precautionary measure. The aviation authorities are now investigating the cause of the crash. |

I’ve heard of these chutes but never seen one put into service in a real-world situation. Now, scale them up for commercial airliners (may require more than one per aircraft).

There is a video on Youtube of an aircraft that had a collision and started on fire. The parachute system worked perfectly, but the aircraft was burning as it descended gently to the ground. Both front-seat passengers died due to the fire. (Probably dead from the collision already) But the parachute did work perfectly all the way down. |

He came alarmingly close to breaking an ankle/tibia/fibula jumping out of the plane like that. It sure looks like he at least sprained his ankle. Can you imagine the irony if that were to have happened? Guy survives an aircraft mishap, successfully deploys ballistic parachute and survives that too. The parachute captures the weight of the plane and slows the descent to a survivable speed. No sign of fire or any reason to act irrationally.... but suddenly Grandpa Walter Rutherford Smithers jumps out of the plane from 5-6 feet up? Even the NAVY Seals say "don't run to your funeral". Take time and think things through. |
