Battle of Antonov Airport & The Death of Mriya (An-225)
The Battle of Antonov Airport was a significant military engagement during the Kyiv offensive of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It occurred on February 24, 2022, at the Antonov Airport in Hostomel, Kyiv Oblast. Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russian troops launched an air assault on Antonov Airport with the objective of capturing it, due to its strategic location less than 10 kilometers from the capital, Kyiv. This move aimed to create an airbridge for airlifting more troops and heavier equipment to directly threaten Kyiv. The Russian forces used a formation of 20 to 34 helicopters, consisting of Mi-8s carrying Russian airborne troops and escorted by Ka-52 attack helicopters. The attack was part of Russia's larger plan for a quick capitulation of Kyiv. As the Russian helicopters approached the airport, they encountered stiff resistance from the Ukrainian military. Ukrainian forces engaged the helicopters with small arms fire, MANPADS (Man-Portable Air Defense Systems), and anti-aircraft guns. Several Mi-8 helicopters were hit and downed, and at least one Ka-52 was shot down. The Ukrainian defenders managed to bring down additional Russian helicopters during the battle. Despite initial successes, the Russian forces eventually secured the airport. However, the Ukrainian counteroffensive, led by the 4th Rapid Reaction Brigade of the National Guard, managed to drive out the Russian forces by the evening of the same day. The unexpected and robust Ukrainian resistance disrupted the Russian plans for a quick seizure of Kyiv. One of the significant losses during the battle was the Antonov An-225 Mriya, the world's largest airplane, which was destroyed in its hangar at the airport. |

Without brave and dedicated news reporters and their crew we would get no truth or evidence of Putins' war crimes. Attacking a peaceful sovereign state. The west knows more about what happening than ordinary Russians do. Putin has stopped any Russian news outlets who had any level of independence to close. Propaganda services only. |
