Wondering the same thing as you have a cut away mechanism within reach for this exact scenario, where there's so much drag, that you cant maintain any lift. I did see him wobble his wings a bit trying to gain some lift but a no go there.
I'd say that the towing release mechanism jammed as there's really no other explanation for him to go in like that.
