Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

"Briefing reporters at the scene on Feb. 24, NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said controllers advised the pilots of Atlas Air Flight 3591 “that there was light-to-heavy rain ahead and provided radar vectors around the weather” as the 767 approached Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) from the southeast. Controllers lost radar and radio contact with the freighter as it flew at 6,000 ft. and 242 kt.

Video the NTSB received from the Chambers County Jail, located 1.4 mi. from the crash area, showed the aircraft “descending in a steep, nose-down attitude,” Sumwalt said. “…By looking at the video, I saw no evidence of the aircraft trying to turn or pull up at the last moment.”

Minutes after contact was lost, the freighter crashed in the shallow waters of the bay—the northeast portion of Galveston Bay on the Texas Gulf coast. Sumwalt described a debris field of about 200 yards long-by-100 yards wide from the impact. The remains of both wings were located within the debris field; pieces of the landing gear were found northwest of the debris path.

Retrieving the aircraft’s “black box” cockpit voice and flight-data recorders (CVR/FDR) in what local authorities describe as muddy, shallow marshland is a high priority, said Sumwalt, who indicated that underwater locator beacons attached to the recorders had not been detected."

also, so far they have recovered two bodies.

The NTSB will take its time and will find the reasons behind this tragic crash

Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

Both the Flight Data Recorder and the Cockpit Voice Recorder have pingers on them, good down to a water depth of 18,000 feet. However, they are saying that if they are jammed in the mud, the pingers may not activate, and the only way to find them will be by dredging. But is sounds like the wreckage area is pretty small (for an airplane crash) so dredging may work. (The pingers have a little battery that has a dissolvable plastic seal over a vent hole. When the plug melts, water gets in, the battery becomes active, and the pinger starts pinging. )

Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

I'm going to say it's most likely a critical failure of the airframe or a pilot that had a death wish

Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

Search teams recovered the CVR today.

"Searchers combing a shallow Texas bay have recovered one of the two crash-proof flight recorders from a cargo plane hauling Amazon packages that crashed Feb. 23.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a tweet it had recovered the cockpit voice recorder on Friday, six days after the Boeing Co. 767-300 dove abruptly and crashed, killing two Atlas Air pilots and a third pilot who was riding in the jump seat. The recording of cockpit sounds could help investigators determine why the plane went down as it was approaching Houston.

The Atlas plane was one of 50 aircraft under contract to Amazon.com Inc. to haul packages for the online retailer. Atlas is a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings Inc.

After what had been a routine descent while preparing to land at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Atlas Flight 3591 abruptly dove thousands of feet into Trinity Bay. There was no emergency radio call by pilots and nothing has emerged to explain whether it was a mechanical failure, actions by pilots or some other problem that led to the plunge.

The cockpit recorder would have captured pilot conversations as well as ambient noise from the flight deck.

Search teams are continuing to try to find a second device, known as a flight data recorder, that stores data on a plane’s systems, actions by the pilots and a detailed flight path."

Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

Today Mar 5th 2019 the NTSB reported the download of the CVR was successfully completed, the last portion of the accident flight is available on the 2 hours' recording, the quality of the recording however is poor and it was difficult to determine what was being said, occasionally required advanced filter techniques. The aircraft was being vectored for an approach to Houston Intercontinental's airport's runway 26L. The NTSB stated: "Crew communications consistent with a loss control of the aircraft began approximately 18 seconds prior to the end of the recording." The FDR was also successfully read out, 54 hours of flight data spanning 17 flights were downloaded. The recorder stores about 350 parameters. The investigators are currently verifying and validating the FDR data. A transcript of the CVR is estimated to be compiled during the next week.

Re: Amazon Prime Plane Crashes into Trinity Bay Near Houston Texas

Shit Hunted! Good find on jail house video. That bitch was nose diving for sure. I live in Houston and you guys have more info on this shit than I do. So far they've recovered 2 of the pilots and the 3rd is toast. We won't know for sure what happened until the cockpit recorder is found but my guess is either suicide or mechanical malfunction. On that jet and that close to the airport, I'd go with some control defect...
